The Ministry of Transport, represented by His Excellency the Minister of Transport, Dr. Abdul Salam Humaid, and the President of the Civil Aviation Authority, Captain Saleh bin Nahid, directed a committee of specialists from the General Aviation Authority to go to Ataq Airport to discuss ways to restart the airport, similar to the operation of all airports in the southern and eastern counties, and give this strategic direction priority and The attention is like other airports, and work is ongoing to achieve that goal, which the leadership of the local authority in Shabwa Governorate, represented by Governor Sheikh Awad Ibn al-Wazir, gives special attention, and makes great efforts in this regard, in addition to the efforts of brother Salem Lamlas, Director of Shabwa Airports.
Ataq Airport occupies an important strategic location, as it is located in the middle of the southern and eastern governorates of the Republic of Yemen, which means that its resumption will serve and facilitate travel for travelers from Shabwa Governorate and neighboring areas. Note that in the recent past, direct flights have been operated from Aden Airport and Sanaa International Airport to Ataq Airport.
The operation of Ataq Airport will serve relief flights for international aid organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, Red Cross, World Food Program and others, as it will facilitate the transportation of medicines and relief materials from the city of Ataq (the center of Ataq). Shabwa Governorate), where the airport is located, to neighboring and remote areas instead of transporting them by land, which It can be damaged, since the first relief flight was operated from Ataq Airport in August 2022.
Not only that, but due to the location of Ataq Airport in the heart of the Republic, it will greatly serve air navigation in several ways, the most important of which is its use as a reserve airport in emergency cases and in cases of very bad. weather conditions due to its location in the center of the country (as shown on the navigation map attached to this article). In addition, in the event that any airport in the Republic is closed – for any reason – Ataq Airport will be considered the nearest backup airport, because it is in the middle of all the main airports within the country (as shown on the map), and this makes it much easier for passengers – if necessary – to complete their journey by land.
In the future it is possible to operate commercial flights departing from Aden Airport through the city of Ataq to the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, because Ataq Airport is located near the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Thus, Ataq Airport is the lifeline of Shabwa. Governorate, and its resumption will reflect positively on development and investment in the county.
